The number of physicians working in private practices has fallen slightly over the years, according to the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician Practice Benchmark Survey.

The survey included 3,500 physicians from 50 states and the District of Columbia who provide at least 20 hours of patient care weekly and do not work for the federal government.

However, a private practice is still an attractive choice for many physicians. As it is rewarding, challenging, and is never dull. Yet since the practice is wholly-owned by a doctor instead of a owned by a hospital or health system, there can be some challenges to overcome and benefits to take advantage of.

The AMA recently highlighted eight tips on how physicians can succeed with a private practice:

Use autonomy to make beneficial changes

Know what mistakes to avoid

Learn how to overcome common private practice hassles

Find out how to keep the exam rooms full

Understand essentials of getting paid

Create the right culture for your team

Know how to be efficient

Have a strong advising team
